Great for a Good Laugh
McCall Smith promotes The Finer Points of Sausage dogs as an entertainment rather than as a novel and entertaining it is. I came to it after reading the first and third books in the series (this is the second) and I was dubious as to whether McCall Smith could come up with a sufficient number of fresh scrapes, embarassments, and misunderstandings for the hapless Professor Dr Maria Moritz von Igelfeld. But he does. This book like all the other light entertainments of McCall Smith, had me chuckling out loud. In both this series and in his No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series, McCall Smith displays excellent characterisation and a fine ear for the cadences of language. This is an ideal book for anyone familiar with, or even aquainted with, life in the academy. The series provides a light counter to David Lodges equally excellent amusing books on university life. Well worth the evening it takes to read.

possibly a fine book on sausage dogs?
When you first view this book, you will probably think "oh goodness, not one of these try-hard comedies" or "but I simply dont care about sausage dogs". Fair enough.I know I did too. However, when you first read the opening pages, you think youre in for an exhausting read with all the german names, and the unnecessary vocab (how many people do you know use the word Philology on a regular occasion?), but the truth is, its a book you can not quite get, until youve read it, and it is truly riddiculous. It is funny. It is an easy read, and youre life probably wont improve from reading it, but itll make you feel a little better about yourself.

Tedious and tired
This is the only book I have read by McCall and was very disappointed. It revolves around the character of a German professor and the scrapes he gets in. The book is very slim and so is the plot. Rather than a novel it is a succession of tired, contrived sketches which lack any subtley or grace. The story about the amputation of a daschunds legs, was in my view, in very poor taste.
